This tape is the only one I was able to make of Mien (called “Yao” by the Thai) The Mien people of Thailand live mainly in the highlands of the Chiang Rai province. Yao villagers visit Chiang Mai from time to time to do some marketing. This very soft-spoken man, aged approximately 25, was a new convert to Christianity and he was accompanied to our school by an English female missionary of the Overland Missionary Fellowship (OMF), the remnant of missionaries expelled from China in the 1950s. She (bad of me not to get her name!) introduces each of Oohyang’s pieces, putting a missionary spin on each situation. The flute being played is one of softest I have ever heard. It is a fipple flute, but the fipple is raised above the shaft and attached with sticky paste. I have not given Thai equivalents because they are irrelevant in this case. I failed to photograph Oohyang, but he gave me his flute, which is shown in two photographs. I found it unique that the fipple is on the opposite side of the instruments from the finger holes.
